Ecuador Pensionado Visa Requirements 2026

$1,446/month in qualifying pension income, apostilled FBI background check, health insurance, and valid passport. Ecuador pensionado visa requirements for 2026.

The Ecuador pensionado visa requirements for 2026 are straightforward: $1,446/month in qualifying pension income, an apostilled criminal background check, health insurance covering two full years, and a valid passport. There is no age minimum, no net worth requirement, and no employer sponsor. If you have a pension that clears the threshold, you qualify.

This post is the condensed checklist. For the full legal analysis with LOMH citations and a detailed process walkthrough, see our comprehensive retirement visa guide.

Ecuador Pensionado Visa Income Requirement 2026

The income threshold is three times Ecuador's Salario Basico Unificado (SBU). The Ministry of Labor set the 2026 SBU at $482/month, making the requirement:

3 x $482 = $1,446/month

This is a household figure. Couples who both receive qualifying pensions can combine them on one application. Each additional dependent without their own pension adds $250/month. We break down the dependent math in our pensionado dependent income guide.

Household Monthly Minimum
Single applicant $1,446
Couple (one pension) $1,696
Couple (both with pensions, combined) $1,446
Couple + 1 child $1,946

The average US Social Security retirement benefit is roughly $1,976/month - well above the threshold.

What Counts as Qualifying Pension Income

  • US Social Security retirement benefits (including early retirement at 62)
  • Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) - if permanent and ongoing
  • Military pensions (all branches), including VA disability compensation
  • Federal and state government pensions (FERS, CSRS, teacher retirement, police/fire)
  • Corporate defined-benefit pensions with fixed monthly payments
  • Canadian CPP/OAS, UK State Pension, and other foreign government pensions
  • Structured annuity distributions with guaranteed monthly payouts

What Does Not Qualify

  • 401(k) or IRA withdrawals - you control the timing and amount, so these are not a "pension"
  • Rental income (use the Rentista Visa instead)
  • Freelance or self-employment income
  • Investment dividends or interest
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI) - needs-based, cannot be paid outside the US
  • Lump-sum retirement distributions

If your income falls in the non-qualifying category, alternatives include Ecuador's Investment Visa ($48,200 lump sum) or the Rentista Visa ($1,446/month in passive income like rents, dividends, or trust distributions).

Document Checklist

Every document issued outside Ecuador must be apostilled in the country of origin and translated into Spanish by a certified translator. Our firm handles translations in Ecuador - clients do not need to arrange this at home.

# Document Details
1 Valid passport Original + copy, at least 6 months validity remaining
2 Pension verification letter Must state your name, benefit type, and exact monthly amount. US Social Security applicants: use the Benefit Verification Letter from ssa.gov. Apostilled and translated.
3 Criminal background check FBI Identity History Summary for US citizens. Apostilled by the US Department of State (federal, not state). Valid only 180 days from issuance - timing is the single most critical factor.
4 Health insurance Must cover the full 2-year visa period. Ecuadorian or international policies accepted. Travel insurance does not qualify. See our health insurance visa guide.
5 Passport photos White background, current, 5x5cm, JPG format for online submission
6 eVisa application Completed through Ecuador's eVisa portal
7 Payment receipts Application fee ($50) and visa grant fee ($270 or $135 for 65+)

The FBI background check drives your entire timeline. It expires 180 days from issuance, and the federal apostille through the US Department of State currently takes 4-6 weeks by mail. Order it early enough to complete the apostille, but not so early that it expires before your application is adjudicated. We help every client map this window during their initial consultation.

Government Fees

Ecuador uses the US dollar as its currency. Government fees have not changed for 2026.

Fee Standard Age 65+
Application fee (non-refundable) $50 $50
Visa grant fee (paid on approval) $270 $135
Cedula (national ID) $5 $5
Total $325 $190

These are government fees only. They do not include legal representation, apostilles (~$20/document), certified translations ($150-$250 depending on volume), or the FBI background check ($18 plus apostille fee).

Timeline: 8 to 16 Weeks

Phase Duration
Document gathering + apostilles 4-8 weeks
eVisa portal submission 1 day
Online review + appointment scheduling 1-3 weeks
In-person appointment in Ecuador 1 day
Adjudication and approval 2-4 weeks
Visa issuance + cedula appointment 1-2 weeks
Total (clean application) 8-16 weeks

The in-person appointment requires you to be in Ecuador. You present original documents, provide biometrics, and complete physical document verification at a Cancilleria Zonal Directorate.

Five Requirements People Miss

After processing hundreds of pensionado applications over 25+ years, we see the same problems delay cases:

  1. Pension letter without a monthly amount. If your Social Security letter shows only an annual figure, or if the monthly amount is not explicitly stated, the Cancilleria will reject it. Request a letter that clearly states your monthly benefit.

  2. Expired FBI background check. The 180-day clock runs from the date the FBI issues the report, not from when you submit your visa application. If processing runs long, your check expires and you must order a new one - plus a new apostille.

  3. No health insurance at filing. Unlike some Ecuador visa categories where health insurance is a post-grant obligation, the pensionado visa requires health insurance at the time of application. Do not wait until after approval.

  4. Missing apostille on a single document. Every foreign document needs its own apostille. One missing apostille stops the entire application. US citizens: the FBI check requires a federal apostille from the US Department of State in Washington, DC - not from a state Secretary of State office.

  5. 401(k) withdrawals presented as pension income. They are not the same thing under Ecuadorian law. If a 401(k) is your primary retirement income, consult a financial advisor about converting it to a structured annuity with fixed monthly payments before applying.

After Approval: The Path Forward

Your pensionado visa grants two-year temporary residency. Here is the progression:

  • 21 months: Eligible for permanent residency (90-day annual absence limit applies during temporary residency)
  • ~2 years: Permanent residency granted
  • ~5 years: Eligible for Ecuadorian citizenship by naturalization

Ecuador allows dual citizenship - Americans, Canadians, and most other nationals do not need to renounce. We cover the full timeline in our pensionado path to citizenship guide.
