Ecuador eVisa Upload Errors: Fix Login Problems

Ecuador eVisa upload errors usually need a clean 300 DPI scan, smaller PDF or JPG, plain file name, and proof matching the visa category before you resubmit.

Ecuador eVisa upload errors are usually fixed by rescanning the document clearly, reducing the file size without blurring seals or text, using the correct file format, and confirming that the document actually matches the visa category before you resubmit. If the same file fails twice, stop and diagnose the reason. Re-uploading the same bad scan can turn a small technical issue into a delayed file.

We see this most often with Americans applying from the United States for investor, pensionado, professional, rentista, or digital nomad visas. Ecuador's eVISAS portal moved visa filing online, but the legal requirements did not disappear. Under LOMH Article 61, temporary residence applicants still need a valid passport, criminal background certificate, proof of category, proof of lawful means of support, the application form, and payment of the government fee.

The portal problem is usually not one problem. It is a mix of file format, file size, browser behavior, and document strategy.

Ecuador eVisa Upload Errors: The First Checks

Before changing legal documents, check the technical items first:

  • File type: passport photos are usually uploaded as JPG. Passport scans commonly accept JPG, JPEG, or PNG. Most supporting documents should be PDF.
  • File size: photos commonly need to stay under 1 MB. Passport scans are often limited to 200 KB. If the portal rejects a file immediately, size is the first thing we check.
  • Resolution: we prefer 300 DPI scans for passports, FBI checks, apostilles, degree records, Social Security letters, and bank documents.
  • Edges visible: the whole page, apostille seal, QR code, signature, stamp, and document number should be visible.
  • File name: use plain English file names with no accents, symbols, commas, or very long strings.
  • Browser: clear the cache, try a current Chrome or Edge browser, and avoid uploading from a phone if the document is important.

Do not compress a PDF until it becomes unreadable. A small file that hides an apostille seal or cuts off a notary stamp is worse than a file that needs resizing.

Login Problems Are Different From Document Problems

An eVisa login problem usually means account, password, email verification, browser, or session timeout. A document problem means the portal accepted the account but rejected, ignored, or failed to save the uploaded file.

For login issues, save screenshots showing the date, URL, and error message. Then try the basic sequence:

  1. Confirm the account activation email was completed.
  2. Reset the password once, not repeatedly.
  3. Use one browser session at a time.
  4. Clear cookies for the portal domain.
  5. Avoid public Wi-Fi if the page times out during upload.

If the portal notice gives an application number, preserve it. That number matters if the file later needs attorney review or a response to Cancilleria.

US Documents That Trigger Upload Problems

For US applicants, the files most likely to cause eVisa upload errors are the documents with seals, multiple pages, or tight timing:

Document Common upload issue Practical fix
FBI Identity History Summary Wrong apostille, expired date, blurry federal seal Order fresh if close to 180 days, apostille through the US Department of State
US state birth or marriage certificate State seal too faint, wrong state apostille Use certified copy and apostille from the issuing state
Social Security benefit letter Screenshot instead of official letter Use the official SSA letter or SSA-1099, then translate if needed
Passport biodata page Glare, cropped machine-readable zone Scan flat in color with all edges visible
Bank CD or deed for investor visa Source-of-funds proof missing Upload the investment proof plus the supporting explanation requested for the file
Degree and transcript Degree only, no transcript or poor scan Prepare both documents, apostilled and translated where required

The apostille office must match the document. An FBI background check requires a federal apostille from the US Department of State Office of Authentications. State-issued or state-notarized records go to the Secretary of State for the state that issued or notarized the document.

The File Must Match The Visa Category

Some upload errors look technical but are really category problems. The file may upload, but the officer later issues an observation because the proof does not support the visa selected.

For 2026, Ecuador's basic salary is $482. That number drives several thresholds in the Reglamento to the LOMH:

Visa category 2026 threshold Common US proof
Pensionado $1,446 per month, 3x SBU Social Security benefit letter, pension award letter, SSA-1099
Rentista $1,446 per month, 3x SBU Leases, interest, dividends, trust or passive income records
Digital nomad $1,446 per month, 3x SBU from foreign work Contracts, invoices, foreign employer letters, bank statements
Professional $482 per month, 1x SBU Degree file plus lawful income proof
Investor $48,200, 100x SBU Bank CD, registered deed, or company shares

The retirement, rentista, digital nomad, and investor thresholds come from the Reglamento categories for jubilado, rentista, remote-work rentista, and inversionista. The general residence requirements sit in LOMH Article 61.

This matters for American retirees because Medicare cards do not prove Ecuador health coverage, a 401(k) withdrawal does not automatically prove a pension, and a bank balance does not prove a pensionado visa unless it fits the category. Investors have a different issue: the $48,200 investment proof must be traceable, and bank compliance may ask where the funds came from.

When To Delete, Replace, Or Wait

If the portal lets you replace a file before final submission, replace the defective file and keep a copy of both versions. If the application has already been submitted, do not assume you can freely change the record without consequences.

We usually treat the cases this way:

  • Replace the file when the problem is size, format, glare, missing page, or a simple upload failure before submission.
  • Prepare a new document when the FBI check is stale, the apostille came from the wrong authority, the translation is incomplete, or the certificate itself is defective.
  • Get legal review first when the issue is income characterization, investment source of funds, prior overstay, criminal history, or the wrong visa category.

The government application fee is non-refundable. For most residence visas, 2026 government fees are usually a $50 application fee plus a $270 grant fee, with a reduced $135 grant fee for applicants age 65 or older. Those government fees are separate from legal fees, translations, apostilles, background checks, and the cedula step.

What To Send Your Lawyer After An Upload Failure

If you are working with our firm, send the evidence in one organized message:

  1. Portal screenshot with the full error message.
  2. Application number, if one exists.
  3. Visa category selected.
  4. The exact file that failed.
  5. File size and file type.
  6. Date the underlying document was issued.
  7. Apostille page, if the document is foreign-issued.
  8. Translation, if the document is not in Spanish.

Our firm charges $1,400 for the full visa process from consultation through cedula, plus government fees and third-party costs. A targeted portal or rejection review starts with a consultation because the right next step depends on whether the issue is technical, documentary, or legal.

Practical Rules Before You Resubmit

Use these rules before pressing upload again:

  • Scan in color, not black and white.
  • Keep every edge visible.
  • Use one document group per PDF.
  • Label files simply, such as passport-smith.pdf or fbi-apostille-smith.pdf.
  • Do not use screenshots for official records unless the government specifically accepts that format.
  • Keep originals in the same order as the electronic file because Cancilleria may ask to compare originals after electronic review.
  • Review the visa category before replacing income, pension, degree, or investment documents.

For US investors, retirees, and professionals, the portal is only the front end. The real test is whether the uploaded file proves the legal requirement cleanly enough that the officer can approve it.
